Fall On Campus
A season of outreach and blessings.
Dearborn First UMC’s partnership with Motor City Wesley has enabled a number of unique opportunities for students and young adults at our area college and university campuses. Below are a few descriptions of the exciting Fall we’ve had with these students and friends.
Glitter Blessings
DFUMC’s very own Angelo M. helped organize an inaugural Glitter Blessings event at HFC on National Coming Out Day. It was a chance for us to celebrate students finding their true selves and reminding them that God loves them just as they are.
Home.Made Worship
This Fall has also seen the development of a new monthly dinner and worship gathering at Wayne State University. With meals donated by local churches, this has become a wonderful opportunity for hospitality and spiritual growth. Special thanks for the gifts DFUMC has given that allowed for November’s meal of kale and bean soup and loaves of bread from the Detroit Institute of Bagels!
Game Time
Every so often, Motor City Wesley is able to gather students for a fun night out. This Fall, we gathered students for a trip to Hamtramck to cheer on our local professional soccer team, Detroit City FC. One Dearborn First Kids participant, Zeke, even went along for the ride!
Vigil for Peace
As the violence in Gaza erupted, students from many faiths organized a candlelight vigil at Wayne State. Because of the ministry of presence DFUMC has enabled with your gifts, Rev. Carl was able to offer prayers for peace and justice in this heartbreaking moment.
Motor City Hymns
With some friends “up north” students have been able to offer musical leadership for a public hymn sing in partnership with Rochester: St. Paul’s UMC. We’ve had a great time singing together at O’Connor’s Public House and we look forward to hosting a similar Advent-themed event around the longest night of the year, December 21st in the Dearborn area.
Art As Activism Retreat
And way back in September, Motor City Wesley was able to co-host a statewide retreat at Lake Louise for college students and young adults. With students from 5 different campuses this “Art As Activism” retreat helped participants imagine how their creative witness in the world could help bring about the peace of Christ for a hurting world.
In all these efforts, we celebrate the capacity of Dearborn First UMC to power young adult Christian discipleship alongside our Motor City Wesley partners and friends!
